BMO Nesbitt Burns names new regional research director

BMO Nesbitt Burns has selected Bert Powell as its new director of Canadian and UK research.

Powell has been working at BMO for around 17 years, starting in 2000 as a software research analyst, according to the Globe and Mail. In 2003, he started to cover special situations and industrial stocks, and eventually tightened his focus solely on industrial companies.

“Bert has a passion for research,” the bank said in an internal memo announcing his appointment. “He comes to the role with interesting perspectives on how our clients use and value research and how we will continue to create a culture of excellence and innovation.”

Powell is replacing Aine O’Flynn, who has been promoted to co-head of global equity products and research. She joined the bank in 1997 as part of its equity research team, moving into equity sales three years later. In December 2013, she became the director of Canadian and UK equity research.

O’Flynn, who is located in Toronto, leads the global equity products and research team together with a New York-based counterpart, Alan Tannenbaum.
