Fidelity Investments Canada launches new ETFs

Financial advisors and investors can now utilize some of Fidelity's active management strategies with the introduction of a new exchange-traded fund (ETF) and ETF series from Fidelity Investments Canada ULC (Fidelity).

The following new Active ETF and ETF series are scheduled to list today at 9:30 a.m. on Cboe Canada (previously NEO Exchange). Investors will be able to purchase (ET) through online brokerages and financial advisors:

  • Fidelity Global Innovators® ETF (FINN/FINN.U (U.S. dollar version))
  • Fidelity Canadian Large Cap Fund – ETF Series (FCLC)
  • Fidelity Greater Canada Fund – ETF Series (FCGC)
  • Fidelity Global Small Cap Opportunities Fund – ETF Series (FCGS/FCGS.U (U.S. dollar version))

Fidelity All-in-One ETFs (FBAL, FCNS, FEQT, FGRO) are also a part of the company's ETF lineup.

The $43.3 billion in assets under administration at Fidelity belong to the combined control of three Fidelity portfolio managers: Mark Schmehl, Dan Dupont, and Hugo Lavallée. They have worked in the sector together for more than 72 years, both as analysts and fund managers. By providing long-term performance and assisting investors and financial advisers in achieving their objectives, they have sought to gain their trust.

The Active ETF series gives Canadian investors and advisors access to the expert active management of established portfolio managers like Dupont, Schmehl, and Lavallée as well as up-and-coming portfolio managers Connor Gordon and Chris Maludzinski. In bottom-up fundamental research, they make use of the worldwide research resources of Fidelity.

Since joining Fidelity in 1999, Mark Schmehl has accumulated more than 20 years of professional experience. From Wilfrid Laurier University, he received a BBA and MBA, and holds a CFA charter. Currently, he is in charge of managing the Fidelity Canadian Growth Company Fund, Fidelity Special Situations Fund, and the Fidelity Global Innovators Class.

Dan Dupont oversees several Fidelity funds, including the Canadian Large Cap Fund, Global Value Long/Short Fund, Concentrated Value Private Pool, Fidelity NorthStar® Fund, and Fidelity NorthStar® Balanced Fund.

He also oversees the management of the equity subportfolios for the Fidelity Monthly Income Fund and Fidelity Income Allocation Fund. In 2001, he started working for Fidelity as a research analyst after receiving a combined BCom with honours in economics and finance from McGill University. He began covering Canadian banks in 2003 and maintained that role until 2008. As of 2007, he was a portfolio manager's assistant.

Hugo Lavallée oversees the Fidelity Canadian Asset Allocation Fund's equity sub-portfolio as well as the Fidelity Climate Leadership Fund, Fidelity Canadian Opportunities Fund, and Fidelity Greater Canada Fund. He joined Fidelity as a research analyst after completing the commerce degree at McGill in 2002.

The Fidelity Global Small Cap Opportunities Fund and Fidelity Global Small Cap Opportunities Institutional Trust are currently under the management of portfolio manager, Connor Gordon. graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Finance, he began working with Fidelity as a research analyst in 2009. From 2013 until 2019, he worked as a generalist analyst, conducting research across all industries and regions with a particular emphasis on small- and mid-cap stocks.

Fidelity Global Small Cap Opportunities Institutional Trust and Fidelity Global Small Cap Opportunities Fund are currently under the management of Chris Maludzinski. He graduated from UBC with a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance, and in 2008 he started working for Fidelity as a research analyst on the Canadian stock research team. He most recently oversaw the Fidelity Canadian Disciplined Equity® Fund's real estate and insurance segments.
