Knowledge is power. The phrase dates to the late 16th century but for investors it’s as relevant today as it’s ever been.

The importance of investor education and protection is the key element of World Investor Week which runs October 4-10, 2021, supported by Canada’s securities regulators.

This year’s event focuses on sustainable finance and fraud and scams prevention. A recent report tied to the second of these found that some people are more susceptible to financial scams.

The week has been running for five years and is organised by the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) and brings together securities regulators, stock markets, financial organizations, and other stakeholders.

“Financial education is key to supporting investor protection locally and worldwide,” commented Ashley Alder, Chair of the IOSCO Board and the Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission. “The 2021 WIW underscores IOSCO’s firm commitment to financial educational initiatives which enable retail investors to have the confidence to participate in financial markets on a properly informed basis. This is particularly important during these challenging times.”

In Canada, along with the CSA, the week is supported by Ontario Securities Commission, IIROC, and the MFDA who will share the messaging of the week in several ways.

AMF Quebec has released a video to warn investors of the risk of buying cryptos.
