Questrade claims first-in-Canada AI account access as brokerage rivalry intensifies

Fintech launches agentic finance tools and AI connectivity, staking bold claims as competition in digital brokerage heats up

Questrade claims first-in-Canada AI account access as brokerage rivalry intensifies

Questrade Financial Group has unveiled a sweeping package of platform upgrades as the Toronto-based firm seeks to position itself as Canada's most technologically advanced self-directed brokerage.

The features include what the fintech describes as the country's first integration connecting retail investment accounts directly to external AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT. The firm is also rolling out a financial automation engine and claiming first-mover status on pre-IPO access.

The announcement centres on a new feature called Questrade MCP, a secure integration built on Anthropic's Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that allows AI assistants to query financial data and, in some cases, initiate transactions. Questrade says it is the first Canadian-based financial institution to offer this connectivity on a first-party, official basis.

Toronto-based wealthtech provider d1g1t announced its own MCP server on July 20, 2026  (days before Questrade's announcement) linking its enterprise wealth management platform directly to Claude, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Copilot. d1g1t is an advisor-facing technology platform while Questrade is connecting retail client accounts on a consumer-facing basis.

The first half of 2026 has seen a wave of MCP-based financial tools reach consumers globally, with US retail broker Robinhood launching agentic trading via MCP in May 2026, routing orders through a separate, pre-funded account. Questrade's move represents the first equivalent push from a Canadian-based retail brokerage, though the market is moving quickly and the window for any firm to claim first-mover status is narrowing.

Financial automation, Pre-IPO

Beyond AI connectivity, Questrade is launching a product it calls Flows, described as Canada's first native financial automation engine. The tool lets clients describe an investment strategy in plain language, after which the system constructs and executes the automation, placing trades on their behalf.

Questrade also says that it is offering "Canada's first self-directed investing offering of true Pre-IPO access."

In May 2026, Wealthsimple launched its IPO Access feature, allowing clients to request shares in select Canadian and US companies at the IPO offering price, with no minimum order and no additional fee, predating Questrade's announcement by several weeks.

However, while Wealthsimple offers access at the IPO price on the day of listing, Questrade says its product will allow accredited investors to buy into private companies before they ever reach a public exchange; potentially months earlier.

Questrade's chief product officer, Hwan Kim, said the product would open access to a broader segment of qualified investors, including those who are income-based rather than wealth-based alone. The pre-IPO feature has not yet launched and remains listed as coming soon.

On pricing, the firm is introducing $0 per-contract fees on US-listed equity options, which it frames as among the most competitive options pricing in Canada.

Two additional features remain in development: a Personal Balance Sheet tool consolidating a client's full financial picture across accounts held at Questrade and elsewhere, and the Pre-IPO Access product described above. Neither has a confirmed launch date.

A rebrand alongside the product push

Alongside the product announcements, Questrade is rolling out a new visual identity with a redesigned logo and updated aesthetic which it says reflects the growing sophistication of its client base.

"Today, Questrade begins our next chapter with first-in-Canada products and a new brand identity that mirrors the ambitious mindset of our clients," said Rob Galaski, President of Questrade Financial Group, in a statement.

Questrade manages approximately $100 billion in total assets under administration, according to its most recent disclosures. Questrade, Inc. is a member of the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) and the Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF).
