Online university to offer FPSC-approved core courses
Canadians aspiring to be Certified Financial Planners now have the option to take core financial courses online.

Home to around 14,000 business students, the Athabasca University has become the first educational institution to offer FPSC-approved core curriculum courses through an online degree program.

Students may now enrol in the eight courses that make up the core curriculum in order to qualify for FPSC Level 1 Certification in Financial Planning, which is the first step to obtaining CFP certification. These courses are part of the university's updated online Bachelor of Commerce Degree program.

Athabasca University Faculty of Business dean Deborah Hurst said the CFP certification is gaining steam among students as demand for CFP professionals continues to increase across Canada.

"As the world becomes more connected, more autonomous, and more competitive, the combination of learning online with AU and earning the CFP designation from FPSC will ensure high demand for our students and enduring relevance for the financial advice they provide," she said.

Students who complete the curriculum program will be allowed to take the level 1 examination to become FPSC Level 1 Certificants in Financial Planning.  For those who want to obtain a CFP certification, they have to accomplish the FPSC-Approved Capstone Course and pass the CFP examination.

FPSC president and CEO Cary List said the addition of Athabasca University as an approved core curriculum provider widens the choices of those aspiring to take financial planning courses.

“AU’s online delivery model expands the opportunities for students from across the country to pursue a degree at the same time they pursue a career as a professional financial planner, regardless of their geographical location," List said.
