Global investor survey reveals most wanted info

Your clients want you to tell them this number

Of all the information, performance indicators and projections you can give to your clients, one number matters the most.

A global survey of investors by Dimensional Fund Advisors reveals that most investors are focused on how much annual retirement income their investments will provide them with rather than the size of their nest egg.

Not surprisingly, the poll of 19,000 investors worldwide also highlighted that many are concerned whether their portfolio will provide them with the comfortable standard of retirement living, and how their savings may be impacted by a market downturn.

“The survey shows that individuals are thinking about what their income in retirement will be, and we are encouraged by this finding,” says Stephen Clark, Head of Global Institutional Services and President, Dimensional International. “We believe this is one of the most important things that investors saving for retirement need to consider and plan for—what their consumption needs will be in the future and if they will be able to afford them.”

All of the investors who were surveyed across several countries including Canada, New Zealand and the US, work with financial advisors.

When asked the main way they judge the value provided by their advisor, 35% said security/peace of mind, 23% said knowledge of their personal financial situation, and 20% said progress towards their goals.

Just 14% said that their advisor’s main value was in investment returns.

“It’s natural for investors to have fears about what is likely their most important financial goal—saving for retirement,” says Dave Butler, Dimensional Co-CEO and Head of Global Financial Advisor Services. “In our experience, advisors who help their clients understand what they can and can’t control are able to create a different investing experience, which helps ease their clients’ concerns.”
