TSX plunges in wake of Parliament Hill shooting

Index recovering as Ottawa goes into lockdown.

A pair of shooters stormed Parliament Hill this morning. Security forces responded, killing one of the shooters. Reports suggest there could be one shooter still on the loose. Police are going door-to-door downtown as schools are locked down and the major party leaders confined to safe areas.

In the immediate wake of the news the Standard & Poor’s/TSX Composite Index plunged a heart-stopping 14 points in just 10-minutes after the first headline reported shots fired. The index went on to fall a further 60 points. Since then the index has recovered some of that ground.

A press conference scheduled by Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz for 11:15 a.m. has been postponed.
