Pension fund earns $26.6 billion in net investment income over six months

One-year total-fund net return reaches 14.5% as at June 30

Pension fund earns $26.6 billion in net investment income over six months

Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan lifted its net assets to $303.2bn as at June 30, adding $23.8bn since the end of 2025 and posting a six-month total-fund net return of 9.5 percent.

The plan reported net investment income of $26.6bn over the first half of the year, according to figures released this week.

Its one-year total-fund net return reached 14.5 percent.

All figures are in Canadian dollars unless noted.

Longer-term results carry particular weight for a plan whose obligations stretch decades ahead.

Ontario Teachers' said it has delivered an annualized net return of 9.4 percent since inception in 1990, with five- and 10-year annualized net returns of 7.7 percent and 7.8 percent respectively.

"We delivered a strong start to 2026, with a total-fund net return that is ahead of our target at this point in the year," said Jo Taylor, president and chief executive officer.

He attributed the results to gains across asset classes, with venture growth, public equities, and inflation-sensitive assets contributing most.

The plan entered the second half "with good momentum to deliver our annual performance objectives," Taylor added.

The portfolio shifted over the period, the plan reported.

Public equity climbed to $61.1bn, or 21 percent of net investments, from 18 percent at year-end, while venture growth rose to 9 percent from 6 percent and infrastructure grew to 15 percent from 13 percent.

Private equity eased to 16 percent from 19 percent.

On the funding side, the plan was fully funded as of January 1, with a preliminary funding surplus of $31.2bn.

The co-sponsors, the Ontario Teachers' Federation and the Government of Ontario, have elected to file the preliminary valuation with regulators.

Among first-half deals, SpaceX listed its shares on the NASDAQ, a milestone for the first investment made by Teachers' Venture Growth.

The plan said the spaceflight and telecommunications company was a significant contributor to the total-fund return.

Governance changes are also underway.

Cathy Cranston, a board member since 2019, will become board chair effective January 1, 2027, succeeding Steve McGirr, who retires at the end of the year after serving a full term.

The Government of Ontario appointed Adam Howard to the board for a term running to December 31, 2028.

The plan separately published its 2026-2030 Climate Strategy, setting a 2030 target of $70bn in Climate Transition Aligned assets covering private-market holdings in companies decarbonizing their operations or enabling the energy transition.
