Oil prices offset by insurance losses on TSX

Brent crude edged higher today exceeding $59 a barrel giving a welcome boost to energy stocks however insurance firms Manulife and Sun Life posted weaker-than-expected quarterly earnings with the losses in that sector.

Brent crude edged higher today exceeding $59 a barrel giving a welcome boost to energy stocks however insurance firms Manulife and Sun Life posted weaker-than-expected quarterly earnings with the losses in that sector and a sell-off of Bombardier shares on earnings and a change of CEO balanced out some of the other gains.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index closed up 78.35 (0.52 per cent)

The NYSE closed higher

Oil is trending higher

Gold is trending higher

The loonie is worth U$ 0.79960 (at 4.20pm)
