Adults who spend decades in financial hardship show measurable declines in memory and processing speed by middle age and are more likely to experience accelerated brain atrophy later in life, according to long-term research.

The academic study suggests that the cognitive cost of chronic financial stress accumulates well before retirement age, and that certain groups face compounding risks that wealth managers and financial planners are uniquely positioned to recognize.

The peer-reviewed study published in Innovation in Aging, a journal of Oxford Academic, are drawn from a 1946 British birth cohort of around 3,000 people and is one of the longest-running longitudinal studies in the world, with data spanning more than 70 years. 

Researchers at University College London linked persistent financial adversity, defined as sustained low household income or recurring financial hardships between ages 26 and 53, with lower processing speed and verbal memory scores at age 53, as well as measurable brain volume changes detected through neuroimaging at ages 69 to 71.

Approximately 16 percent reported persistent low household income and 12 percent reported persistent financial hardships across the study period, defined as falling in the bottom 20 percent of the analytical sample at two or more of three measured time points.

One test measured how quickly participants could think and react, a skill that tends to slow down as we age. By age 53, people who had spent years on low incomes scored noticeably lower on this test than those who had always had enough money. It wasn't a dramatic gap, but it was consistent and suggest that years of financial stress had already begun to slow down how fast their brains were working, even before they reached retirement age.

Brain scans showed that for people who had lived on low incomes for many years, parts of the brain had shrunk. The longer and more consistently someone struggled financially, the more pronounced those changes tended to be. In other words, years of financial hardship left a visible mark on the brain itself.

Who is most at risk?

The research identified three groups facing disproportionately higher cognitive risk when combined with persistent financial adversity: men, individuals from disadvantaged childhood socioeconomic backgrounds, and carriers of the APOE-ε4 gene — the primary genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease.

Men who had struggled financially for long periods showed faster brain shrinkage than women in the same situation. And those who had grown up poor on top of being poor as adults had it even worse — the part of the brain responsible for memory shrank faster and more significantly than in people who had only faced hardship at one stage of life. Essentially, the earlier the financial struggle began, and the longer it lasted, the greater the damage to the brain over time.

For financial advisors serving clients approaching or in retirement, the research introduces a dimension that extends well beyond portfolio performance.

Clients who have spent decades navigating low income, debt burdens, or chronic financial uncertainty may arrive at retirement with cognitive profiles meaningfully different from those of their higher-income peers — and may require different approaches to financial planning, estate guidance, and care coordination.

The study's authors note that only persistent exposure — not intermittent bouts of hardship — showed significant links to cognitive decline, lending weight to the argument that early, sustained financial support and planning could have long-term protective effects.

The research team noted that their findings are consistent with the cumulative inequality theory, which holds that early financial disadvantage compounds over time to produce increasingly divergent health trajectories. The authors concluded that supporting financially vulnerable working-age adults could be a meaningful strategy for preventing dementia in an aging population, particularly given current cost-of-living pressures that are driving record numbers of households into financial hardship.
