Employment insurance rose in July

There were 10,500 more Canadians receiving employment insurance in July than in June according to new data from Statistics Canada. The 2 per cent rise brought the total number of claimants to 545,200. Year-over-year there was a 7.1 per cent rise. British Columbia saw the largest increase at 3.9 per cent followed by Ontario (3.6 per cent), Alberta (1.8 per cent) and Saskatchewan (1.2 per cent). In Manitoba and Newfoundland and Labrador there was a decline in claimants of 2.5 and 1.5 per cent respectively.
