Bloomberg Nanos index slips to 51.43, still below year's high but above April low
Canadian household confidence pulled back this week, breaking a run of gains that had built through the early part of summer.
The weekly gauge tracking how Canadians feel about their finances, jobs, the broader economy and property values fell to 51.43, down from 52.65 seven days earlier. That reading sits below the 2026 peak of 54.19 touched in late February, though it remains well clear of April's low point of 46.31.
"Canadian consumer confidence eased this week, with the Bloomberg Nanos Canadian Confidence Index declining to 51.43 from 52.65 the previous week. The index remains below its 2026 high of 54.19 and well below the peak recorded in 2021." Nik Nanos, chief data scientist at Nanos Research, said.
The pullback shows up across both halves of the survey. The Pocketbook measure, which tracks how people view their own financial position and job security, slipped to 52.77 from 54.20 a week prior. The Expectations component, which captures views on where the economy and local real estate prices are headed over the next six months, eased to 50.09 from 51.10.
Within the Pocketbook figures, positive views on personal finances dropped to 12.13 this week from 14.62 seven days earlier, while confidence in job security fell to 55.66 from 59.14. On the Expectations side, optimism about the strength of the Canadian economy edged down to 20.12 from 21.05, and positive sentiment on real estate values slipped to 34.78 from 35.45.
