​Canada opposes NAFTA scrutiny

The scrutiny of the environmental records of Canada’s oilsands is reportedly being opposed by the government and the US and Mexico look set to veto the checks too.

The scrutiny of the environmental records of Canada’s oilsands is reportedly being opposed by the government and the US and Mexico look set to veto the checks too. The North American Free Trade Association has a mechanism for investigating complaints regarding potential breaches of guidelines and environmental groups are concerned that tailings from oilsands are leaking into rivers causing harm to fish. The NAFTA commission has no powers to force countries to comply though.
