A senior executive from the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ) is leaving the pension fund manager to take on a top job with the new federal government.
Marc-André Blanchard announced Sunday that he will step down from his role as executive vice-president and head of CDPQ Global and global head of sustainability, to be the chief of staff to prime minister Mark Carney.
Blanchard joined CDPQ in 2020 and has focused strongly on expanding its international strategy and drive its sustainability agenda which included an ambitious approach to energy transition. CDPQ recently surpassed its climate targets and Blanchard has been a leading industry voice on sustainability issues, adding the sustainability leadership role to his responsibilities in 2022.
“Thanks to his leadership, we have transformed from an organization present in the world to a truly united and globally recognized organization,” said Charles Emond, President and CEO of CDPQ. “Additionally, we have raised our ambition in sustainable investment, which is now a hallmark of the institution.”
Among the pension fund manager’s sustainable investments in recent months is 2024’s major investment in American forestland as part of its Sustainable Land Management initiative.
Blanchard’s new role sees him return to public service; he was previously Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations. Before that he was a lawyer with McCarthy Tetrault and Woods.
"CDPQ is an exceptional organization, and it has been an honour to serve Québec and the six million Quebecers it represents. I leave knowing there is a strong, committed and innovative team that will continue to raise the bar and showcase CDPQ on the international stage. Answering the call to serve my country is a decision I make with humility and enthusiasm," said Blanchard.
