Ontario insurance broker wins major award

In an industry often portrayed as behind the times, some companies are working hard to toss the stereotype out on its ear

Waterstone Human Capital announced Canada's 10 Most Admired Corporate Cultures last week, its annual recognition of best-in-class Canadian organizations who are exhibiting corporate cultures that help enhance performance and sustain a competitive advantage.

In the Mid-Market category – revenues between $50 million and $500 million – one of the 10 winners was Cowan Insurance Group, a Cambridge-based insurance broker with over 450 employees operating from 10 locations in Ontario.

It’s not often that insurance brokers are singled out for being exemplary employers so this recent award must be extra special for all those working at Cowan.

“It is truly an honour to be counted as a company among the 10 Most Admired Corporate Cultures this country has to offer,” said Heather McLachlin, President, Cowan Insurance Group. “We’ve created an impressive culture characterized by an ‘anything is possible’ attitude, where our leaders are actively engaged with their employees, and encourage taking initiative—with the goal of delivering exceptional value to our clients.”

Cowan’s submission highlighted a culture characterized by excellence, commitment and innovation; that’s the outcome of disciplined employee engagement strategies, a continuous focus on employee development and an integrated recruitment and retention frameworks.

Waterstone is one of Canada’s leading executive search firms; its selection of Cowan speaks highly of the work done by the insurance broker and represents what the insurance industry as a whole should strive for.

“‘We care about what you care about’ is the cornerstone of everything Cowan Insurance Group’s team members do, and its well-aligned culture has delivered exceptional performance and results,” said Jennifer Mondoux, Managing Director, Waterstone Human Capital. “Combine this with Cowan’s impressive Corporate Social Responsibility strategy, in that its foundation has raised $20M in community-related donations, and it’s no wonder our Canada’s 10 board voted as they did. Congratulations to President Heather McLachlin and to the entire team at Cowan for this well-deserved win.”
