Insurer partners for Innovation Challenge

One Quebec insurer is pulling together the best in healthcare and IT to find solutions for better healthcare and disease prevention – with the ultimate goal of reducing claims

“We are thrilled to organize this event where innovation, technology and expertise make a difference in people’s lives,” says Denis Berthiaume, senior vice-president and general manager, wealth management and life and health insurance for Desjardins Group. “Every step towards health and well-being is important and we are pleased to work with our partners to make it happen.”

Desjardins Group and its partners Hacking Health, IBM Canada, CHU Sainte-Justine and the Public Health Agency of Canada are bringing together healthcare and IT professionals for the Innovation Challenge, from November 6 to 8.

Monique F Leroux, Chair of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer of Desjardins Group, will deliver the opening address for the event.

Life insurers are placing a greater emphasis on the health and well-being of employees, as a healthy workforce not only means greater productivity, but fewer claims due to injury and illness.

“A good prevention program reduces risk factors associated with psychological and physical health, lifestyle habits and company operations,” says Francois Laflamme, senior consultant, associate and president of Optima Global Health. “When considering staff turnover, employee satisfaction is of primary importance. To succeed at this, employers must be able to rely on trained, engaged and healthy employees.”

According to a Health Canada report, a physically active employee is 12% more productive than a less active colleague.

Working in teams during the three days in November to build on the expertise of those involved, the Innovation Challenge is designed to bring forward new digital technologies and innovative ideas to find modern solutions to prevent some of the health problems that will be presented to them.

Multiple prizes will be awarded to teams presenting exceptional solutions.
