CRA strikes creating confusion among procrastinating tax filers

A third of Canadians have yet to file their tax returns ahead of the May 1 deadline and the strikes are making them nervous

CRA strikes creating confusion among procrastinating tax filers

Almost two thirds of Canadians have done the annual chore of filing their tax returns with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) but many have yet to tick it off their to do list.

Among the 37% yet to file, a quarter of respondents to a new H&R Block poll say that they are ready to file. So why the procrastination?

Although 19% are inclined to hurry up to ensure they file their taxes in time due to the potential strike by CRA employees, 15% say it’s that that’s holding them back in the hope that tax workers downing tools could mean an extension to the May 1 tax-filing deadline.

Even among those who have already filed though, there is concern that a CRA strike could delay any refunds.

Don’t miss out

H&R Block recently reported that Canadians are taking extra care with their returns this year as tax refunds are an important part of budgeting for some under-pressure households.

Peter Bruno, President of H&R Block Canada, is urging all Canadians to file their taxes on time.

"If you run out of runway and end up scrambling last minute to gather the necessary documents, receipts and other relevant information, it's much more likely that you could miss out on the numerous tax credits and benefits that you may be entitled to,” he said. “Filing on time is also critical to avoid potential disruptions to benefits or quarterly installments payments, such as the Climate Action Incentive, Canadian Child Benefit or GST/ HST."
