Insurance scam hits TTC

One employee’s been fired and several more face disciplinary action in a case of simple greed aided and abetted by a greedy business owner.

The Toronto Star reports that one TTC employee has been let go and more could be on the way out after an investigation into alleged benefits fraud by the transportation agency.

“The TTC anticipates more employees will face discipline, up to and including dismissal. No criminal charges have been laid against any TTC employee at this time,” the TTC said in a news release. “The TTC takes the responsibility it has to protect public money extremely seriously.”

The fraud began with the owner of an orthotics store allegedly began providing inflated health-insurance receipts to Manulife, the TTC’s health insurer. The owner would split the profit with the employee.
The TTC’s own internal investigation began this summer after an anonymous tip was received uncovering the alleged benefits scheme.
