Man who mutilated more than 100 patients and fled to Canada receives sentence
It was last month that we told you about the case of Jacobus van Nierop, the so-called “horror dentist” who was alleged to have mutilated more than 100 patients (see Horror Dentist goes on trial) – and now he has received a jail sentence.
The 51-year-old Dutchman, who fled to Canada, has been sentenced to eight years in jail by a French court after he was found guilty of breaking patients’ jaws, pulling out healthy teeth, creating abscesses and blood poisoning as part of several unnecessary procedures.
Ultimately he was charged with aggravated assault, as well as fraud, as he attempted to get money from both insurance companies and patients from 2009-2012. In addition to his jail sentence he has also been banned from practising as a dentist for the rest of his life.
To recap the story, Van Nierop, using the name Mark, entered the rural French area of Chateau-Chinon back in 2008 following complaints in the region about a lack of medical services. However, his treatments were quickly criticized with numerous reports about lost teeth, broken jaws and more.
He fled France in June 2013 just as he was due to face trial – and was ultimately arrested in New Brunswick in September 2014 on an international arrest warrant. He is said to have attempted to cut his throat when police arrived and he has made claims that he suffers from psychological problems.
