There was a more settled trading day in much of the world Thursday with the Chinese stock exchange closed for a 2-day holiday allowing the Asian indexes to set a calmer tone.
The Toronto Stock Exchange gained as export figures showed gains and US data and oil prices boosted sentiment on Wall Street.
In Europe, the ECB raised hopes of further quantative easing as the strength of the euro threatens downward pressure on inflation. There was also some positive data on growth; overall the major markets closed higher.
The S&P/TSX Composite Index closed up 51.16 (0.38 per cent)
The Dow Jones closed up 23.38 (0.14 per cent)
Oil is trending higher (Brent $50.67, WTI $46.78 at 4.40pm)
Gold is trending lower (1124.60 at 4.40pm)
The loonie is valued at U$0.7577
