History of Fidelity Investments

Fidelity Investments was founded in 1946 by Edward C. Johnson II. The company began as a small investment advisory firm; through the years, it became known for a number of notable firsts.

The company introduced Trend and Capital funds in 1958, described as “two of the industry’s first aggressively managed equity funds.” In 1986, Fidelity Select Portfolios was the first to offer hourly pricing instead of end-of-day pricing. And in 2018, the company launched Fidelity ZERO Funds, the first of its kind in the industry.

More recently, Fidelity became the first brokerage firm to offer financial education in the metaverse through “The Fidelity Stack” in Decentraland.

About Fidelity Investments Chair and CEO Abby Johnson

Abby Johnson is the third generation to lead Fidelity, following in the footsteps of her father and grandfather. She first joined the company in 1988 as an analyst and portfolio manager. She rose through the ranks, becoming president in 2013 and Chair and CEO in 2014.

Johnson is an Art History graduate from Hobart and William Smith Colleges. She also earned an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Under Johnson’s leadership, Fidelity ventured into the cryptocurrency market through a subsidiary called Digital Assets. This move reaffirms Fidelity’s reputation as a leader in the investment services industry.
