Top Toronto investment firm leader receives Order of Canada

The Order of Canada is given to Canadians recognized for their contributions, under the motto "they desire a better country."

The leader of a top Toronto independent asset management firm has been awarded the Order of Canada, announced the firm Tuesday.

Eric Sprott, founder and chairman of Sprott Inc. received the honourable title for his contributions as a philanthropist, notably in the areas of health care, education and international development.

"On behalf of everyone at Sprott, I would like to congratulate Eric on his appointment as a Member of the Order of Canada," said Peter Grosskopf, chief executive officer of Sprott in a release. "Eric and his family are committed philanthropists who give back to the community through their generous support of a number of worthy causes."

The Order of Canada was established in 1967 by the Queen, recognizing contributions to Canada with the motto desiderantes meliorem patriam, meaning "they desire a better country."

An independent advisory panel led by Canada’s Chief Justice of the Supreme Court recommends the recipients.
