Football star to start wealth management firm

Running back goes from the field to Wall Street

Not many sports stars have made the switch from the football field to Broadway… and even fewer have then moved on to Wall Street. However, that is the remarkable achievement of Eddie George.

The former Tennessee Titans running back has announced that he will become managing director at his own wealth management company, known as Edward N George Wealth Management. The firm is expected to make athletes’ finances its focus.

Speaking to ESPN, Mr George, who is currently appearing on Broadway in the musical Chicago, outlined his excitement for the new position.

“Everything I do has a purpose and passion behind it,” he said. “When I came into the league, I didn’t understand all the financial terminology. I lost some money in personal investments that I shouldn’t have. I want kids coming out of college to be more prepared for the financial side.”

According to Mr George, the company will not have access to client funds, nor will it look to make investments for players via a power of attorney. Instead, it will simply manage and recommend investments.

Mr George claims his life mission is “entrepreneurship, entertainment and education” and sees running a wealth management company as covering both the education and entrepreneurship areas.

He already has a licence in place to begin practising as both an investment advisor and securities agent. He passed two tests during 2015 in order to become an official member of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and he previously graduated from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management with an MBA.

He will have partners in his firm. They include Greg Eastman, who was actually Mr George’s own financial advisor for more than 20 years. He will also join forces with First Financial Equity Corporation, which is a wealth management firm based in Scottsdale, Arizona.
