Oil transporters face additional costs from federal law

A new law will require firms that transport oil by rail to pay into a compensation fund the federal government announced today.

A new law will require firms that transport oil by rail to pay into a compensation fund the federal government announced today. Minister of transport Lisa Raitt explained that the fund will be used in the event of a derailment such as the Lac Megantic tragedy which led to the legislation. Other requirements of the new Safe and Accountable Rail Act include minimum levels of liability insurance and new powers for the transport minister to deal with operators not acting safely.
