Canada, US to launch joint rail safety standards

Safety standards will be introduced across Canadian and US rail networks which aim to avoid another disaster like the one that claimed the lives of 47 people at Lac-Megantic in 2013.

Safety standards will be introduced across Canadian and US rail networks which aim to avoid another disaster like the one that claimed the lives of 47 people at Lac-Megantic in 2013. Measures include a 50mph limit for some trains and a new braking system. The Canadian transport minister Lisa Raitt announced the new standards alongside US her US counterpart Andrew Foxx at a news conference on Friday. New trains will be required to comply immediately and there will be a schedule for retrofitting to older stock.
