The human cost of the battered oil industry is shown in stark detail today with the release of the latest employment insurance figures from Statistics Canada. There were an extra 15.6 per cent people claiming EI in February compared to a month earlier, taking the total number claiming the benefit to 36,000. StatsCan said this was the fourth consecutive monthly increase and the largest since May 2009. Nationally claims rose by 2 per cent to 509,800. Saskatchewan and PEI saw increases in claims by 4.9 per cent and 3.7 per cent respectively. There were slight increases in other provinces although little change in Ontario and BC.
