Investment Planning Counsel (IPC) is a leading provider of investment and financial planning services to individuals, families, and businesses in Canada. Founded in 1996, IPC works with over 650 advisors and 200,000 clients across the country. It manages $4.6 billion in assets under management.

History of Investment Planning Counsel

Investment Planning Counsel is one of the leading independent wealth management firms in Canada. It was established in 1996 and is a subsidiary of IGM Financial. IPC takes pride in providing holistic financial planning to its clients, focusing on the importance of personalized financial advice.

In April 2023, Canada Life acquired Investment Planning Counsel from IGM. This deal makes Canada Life one of the largest non-bank wealth management firms in Canada.

Products and Services of Investment Planning Counsel

IPC offers a wide range of investment and financial planning services, including:

  • Investment management
  • Financial planning
  • Retirement planning
  • Estate planning
  • Tax planning

IPC's investment management services include investment strategies that are tailored to each client's individual needs and risk tolerance. IPC's advisors use The Personal Wealth Management Strategy in assessing all aspects of financial health to come up with a plan that suits their clients best.

Culture at Investment Planning Counsel

IPC’s parent company, IGM Financial, was recognized as one of the Top 100 Canadian employers in 2022. This speaks to the kind of workplace culture that’s cultivated by IGM and its subsidiaries like IPC.

IPC is guided by its parent company’s corporate values:

  • Progressive: challenge traditional thinking to come up with new ways of working
  • Entrepreneurial: celebrating initiative and ownership
  • Responsible: taking accountability and doing the right thing
  • Inclusive: unique perspectives are to be celebrated

A strategic digital transformation is underway to improve the investing experience for clients, employees, and stakeholders. The company has been working with top tech companies such as Google, Salesforce, and Microsoft to modernize its delivery of products and services.

This dedication to embracing technology has earned IPC the Wealth Professional award for most innovative use of wealth tech.

Shewchuk has a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree from the University of Manitoba. He is also a Certified Management Accountant and holds a Chartered Financial Analyst degree.

Future at Investment Planning Counsel

While IPC is set to join the Canada Life fold soon – for now, it will continue to operate independently – many changes are expected to take place. One thing is certain: IPC has truly made an impact in the wealth management space. IPC’s legacy – a strong focus on values, people, and clients – will endure.
