What a week! The main index of the TSX closed down more than 3 per cent Monday and climbed back steadily before ending almost 3 per cent higher Thursday.

Friday’s session ended with a modest gain as oil prices stabilized, producer prices unexpectedly gained 0.7 per cent in July, and China ended the week with gains.

Toronto outperformed New York with the Dow largely flat, although the Nasdaq managed a record-breaking reversal following the early-week losses.

Asian markets were largely higher and Europe was mixed as investors held onto caution even though China and oil appeared to have bottomed-out.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index closed up 98.40 (0.71 per cent)
