Morning Briefing: Markets await US jobs data Markets await US jobs data
Data on the US jobs market is a key component of the Fed’s interest rate decisions and following this week’s words from Janet Yellen that a December rise could happen, the markets are awaiting today’s labour report.

Analysts are expecting the report at 8.30am ET to show an increase of just under 200,000 jobs and unemployment to have held at 5.1 per cent. September’s data was disappointing but a rebound could point to an interest rate increase before Christmas.

Asian and European markets are cautious so far Friday with most major Asian indexes closing with losses while European markets are also lower. Shanghai and Tokyo were outperformers as Japan benefitted from a weaker yen and the Chinese index entered a technical bull market.

China overtakes Canada as top US trading partner
Canada has been overtaken by China as the largest trading partner of the United States. In part it’s another impact of the weakened oil industry with energy exports slipping in value over the past year while China’s exports to the US have increased. China now makes up 17.4 per cent (U$441.6 billion) of total US trade with Canada at 15.3 per cent (U$438 billion) according to US Commerce Department data.
