Why employees’ online reviews matter

Why employees’ online reviews matter As employees’ workplace reviews increasingly influence potential hires’ decisions about where to apply, a jobs website is warning employers not to ignore their star ratings.

Indeed has named 25 Canadian employers “winning the battle for the hearts and minds of their employees” in online company reviews – with banks and transport companies dominating the list.

RBC topped the list, rated 4.1 out of five by more than 1800 staff who cited its fast-paced environment and friendliness among the best parts of the company. Workers also highlighted its culture as “excellent”, and praised its teamwork and support for career advancement.

In second place was the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), praised by staff for its employee development, rewards and recognition, and family-friendly environment.

Telus Communications, General Motors and The Hospital for Sick Children (Sick Kids) rounded out the top five, with employees lauding their flexibility, pay and benefits, and workplace culture respectively.

WestJet Airlines, H&R Block, TD Canada Trust, Sun Life Financial and Desjardins also made the top 10.

Indeed said the one thing the top 10 had in common was their culture, which was ever more important to staff.

“Increasingly we see that the modern workforce optimizes for happiness. Companies that are willing to evolve and invest in their workforce will continue to attract and retain top talent,” Indeed managing director Jodi Kasten says.

The others who made the top 25 were Air Canada, Enbridge, National Defence and Canadian Armed Forces, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, BMO Financial Group, Ledcor, PwC, Scotiabank, SNC-Lavalin, Amec Foster Wheeler, IBM, CIBC, Shaw Communications, Enterprise Holdings and Husky Energy.

Indeed said while online reviews can greatly influence a job seeker’s next career step, they can also help company leaders better assess how their company is doing, and how they compare to others in their industry, as well as getting recommendations about how to improve employee experience.
